Transparency & Disclosure

About Bonsai Law — and how it connects to this site.

The Contract Studio UK exists to sell solicitor-drafted legal templates to small businesses. This page explains who drafts them, which parts of the service are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), and what your options are if your situation needs advice rather than a document.

We publish this page because we think you deserve a straight answer, and because SRA rules on connected businesses require it.

The connection, in one paragraph

The Contract Studio UK Ltd is a company that sells legal document templates. It is not a law firm and it is not regulated by the SRA. The templates on this site are drafted and maintained by Vanessa Challess, a practising solicitor and the founder of Bonsai Law — a separate, SRA-regulated law firm.

Vanessa runs both businesses, but they are legally and operationally distinct. The Contract Studio sells you a document. Bonsai Law provides regulated legal advice. This page exists so you know which is which.

What is and isn't SRA-regulated

THIS SITE — CONTRACT STUDIO

Not a law firm. Not SRA-regulated.

What you buy: a document, drafted by a solicitor, sold to you as a product. You use it on your own responsibility. No solicitor–client relationship is created between you and Vanessa or Bonsai Law by buying a template here.

BONSAI LAW

An SRA-regulated law firm.

What you get: regulated legal advice, with the full protections that come with instructing a solicitor — professional indemnity insurance, complaints route via the Legal Ombudsman, and legal professional privilege on your communications.

SRA number: [SRA number to confirm] · Verify on the SRA register

What you don't get when you buy a template here. Because The Contract Studio is not itself regulated by the SRA, template purchases do not attract the client protections that apply when you instruct a law firm — no professional indemnity insurance covers your use of the template, no Legal Ombudsman complaints route applies to the sale, and communications with us are not covered by legal professional privilege. If those protections matter for your situation, instruct a solicitor.

Your free choice of solicitor

If your situation needs bespoke legal advice rather than a template, you have a free choice of solicitor. You are not obliged to use Bonsai Law, and nothing on this site should be read as steering you toward one firm over another.

The Law Society runs a public register of solicitors and firms in England and Wales — search by area of law, location, and language:

What Bonsai Law does (informational)

For completeness — if you want to know more about the firm behind the drafting — Bonsai Law is a small, independent law firm offering commercial and employment law advice, litigation, and support for HR matters (also delivered through the sister service Electra HR). It is regulated by the SRA and operates independently of this website.

None of the above is a recommendation. It is disclosure.

Informed consent — read before contacting Bonsai Law through any link on this site.

If you follow a link from The Contract Studio to Bonsai Law, you are choosing to contact one particular SRA-regulated firm. The Contract Studio and Bonsai Law share a founder (Vanessa Challess), which is a financial and personal connection you should be aware of. You are not obliged to use Bonsai Law and may choose any other solicitor.

Bonsai Law will treat you as a prospective client from the point of first contact and will follow its own client care and engagement procedures.

This page is a transparency notice under the SRA's guidance on separate businesses (paragraph 5.3, Code of Conduct for Solicitors; paragraph 7.1(b), Code of Conduct for Firms). If you have questions about how The Contract Studio and Bonsai Law relate to each other, please email vanessa@thecontractstudiouk.com.
